There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Goal of Position

To lead in congregational worship by scriptures.

Job Description

Read liturgical lessons from the scriptures, as selected by the pastor.  Lessons may include the Call to Worship; also, they may be responsive.  Generally, scriptures are read during Sunday morning worship, but may also include those read during “Nine Lessons and Carols,” our Traditional Christmas Eve service.

Time Required

Scriptures are 2-3 minutes in length, but attendance at full worship service is advised.  Volunteers will be asked to read usually no more than every two months.

Training Provided

There is no formal training, but volunteers are urged to read scripture passage(s) in advance; may read aloud in front of a mirror.

Qualifications and Special Skills

Readers should be able to project their voices and to read with expression.  Their reading should convey an understanding of and/or commitment to the subject.

Readers will benefit by becoming more proficient readers and will become more involved in the worship experience as they perform this important function.
